Internships

An internship is required for the course LEAD 404: Leadership - Internship and Career. Below are details for finding an internship and the required forms that need to be completed in order to confirm and approve the internship.

Finding an Internship

Students are responsible for obtaining their own internships–but we are here to support you in this. This will offer students rich experiences related to career development and the realities of the job search process. The following are some resources to support your internship search:

  • Search for internship opportunities on Handshake
  • Check out Micro-Internships! Micro-Internships are short-term, paid, professional assignments that are similar to those given to new hires or interns. These projects enable Career Launchers to demonstrate skills, explore career paths, and build their networks as they seek the right full-time role. Unlike traditional internships, Micro-Internships can take place year-round, typically range from 5 to 40 hours of work per week, and are due between one week and one month after kick-off. Micro-Internships are used by companies ranging from those in the Fortune 100 to emerging start-ups and go across departments including sales, marketing, technology, HR, and finance.
  • SDSU Career Services lists some additional internship sites and opportunities.

Documents to Begin Internship Approval Process

Once you have found an internship, you will need the following documentation for formal approval:

  • SDSU Liability Waiver: Submit it ASAP to Shareka White at [email protected] and Claudia Martinez at [email protected]
  • Service Learning Agreement (SLA): is completed electronically by the Site Supervisor & due before you begin working at the site. It is an agreement with the university and the internship site. We will determine if your internship site already has an approved SLA on file with the university.
    • If they do not have an SLA on file, the department coordinator, Kim Danh at [email protected] will then initiate the electronic Internship Site Questionnaire that will go to your internship site supervisor to be completed. Please communicate to your internship supervisor to look for this document via their email and that you cannot start working at the site before that document has been completed. This process can be lengthy, so the sooner you start it, the better.
    • In order to get the SLA process started, please email the following information:
      • Your full name, Red ID number, internship site name, and projected start date for the internship.
      • Your site supervisor's name, title, and email.
    • Once we receive back the Internship Site Questionnaire from your supervisor and there are no red flags, you will be notified that you have been cleared and given the okay to begin collecting your hours.
    • We encourage you to check out this list of sites already approved for expedited processing. The list may spark ideas for where you want to complete your internship.
  • The Learning Plan: This document is an agreement between your instructor and you, which you will complete with your internship site supervisor. This form clarifies the student's goals set between the student and the site supervisor. Please work through the Learning Plan and obtain all required learning objectives, your instructor’s signature, initials, including yours, as indicated.
IMPORTANT: A Liability Waiver Form, the Internship Site Questionnaire (ISQ), Service Learning Agreement (SLA) and the Learning Plan will need to be completed in order for you to begin your internship.
